Northrop Grumman Unveils Next-Generation Dual-Feed Chain Gun

Dual Chain Gun

Northrop Grumman has introduced the M230LF Dual Feed Bushmaster Chain Gun, a next-generation medium-caliber weapon designed to enhance versatility in counter-uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) and ground combat scenarios. The new 30x113mm cannon, an upgrade to the company’s previous M230LF single-feed system, enables operators to seamlessly switch between two types of ammunition.

Unlike its predecessors, which required manual switching or mixed ammunition belts, this system allows operators to instantly choose between two ammunition types with the flip of a switch. The recommended load includes XM1211 proximity-fuzed rounds, ideal for counter-drone operations, and XM1198 high-explosive dual-purpose rounds for anti-armor engagements.

Designed for integration on remote weapon stations, the M230LF can be mounted on a range of land vehicles, including 4×4, 6×6, and 8×8 platforms. According to John McCollum, Northrop Grumman’s director of business development for guns operating units, live-fire trials are planned in 2025 using a platform similar to the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). McCollum noted that the cannon’s firing rate is adjustable, ranging from 50 to 200 rounds per minute, another upgrade over previous models.

Northrop Grumman’s vice president of armament systems, Dave Fine, emphasized the advantages of the dual-feed system. “This chain gun is the latest in our Bushmaster line to deliver reliable, multi-mission capabilities addressing the evolving threat environment,” Fine said. He highlighted how the dual-feed technology, combined with five decades of Bushmaster expertise, empowers operators to respond quickly to a range of threats in complex combat situations.

Despite its advanced capabilities, the U.S. Army does not currently have a requirement for a dual-feed cannon, according to McCollum. However, international interest, particularly in Europe, is growing, as regions seek enhanced C-UAS solutions. Northrop Grumman recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Lithuania to support local suppliers in producing medium-caliber ammunition for Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs), signaling potential export opportunities.

With Technology Readiness Level 6 achieved, the M230LF Dual Feed Bushmaster Chain Gun is nearing full operational testing.
